Modern Muslim exegetes change and\or add words to Allah’s revelation to help him to save face

SAHIH INTERNATIONAL 24:2

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

The word unmarried is not in the text. So the punishment for adultery was 100 lashes at the beginning of Islam. This was changed to stoning over time. To save Allah’s face for being inconsistent and changing his mind the word “unmarried” has been added to the text.

Comparing translations shows this:

[24.2] (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.
[24.3] The fornicator shall not marry any but a fornicatress or idolatress, and (as for) the fornicatress, none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; and it is forbidden to the believers.

Sahih International: The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah , if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

Pickthall: The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them (with) a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment.

Yusuf Ali: The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.

Shakir: (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.

Muhammad Sarwar: Flog the fornicatress and the fornicator with a hundred lashes each. Let there be no reluctance in enforcing the laws of God, if you have faith in God and the Day of Judgment. Let it take place in the presence of a group of believers.

Mohsin Khan: The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of the believers witness their punishment. (This punishment is for unmarried persons guilty of the above crime but if married persons commit it, the punishment is to stone them to death, according to Allah’s Law).

Arberry: The fornicatress and the fornicator — scourge each one of them a hundred stripes, and in the matter of God’s religion let no tenderness for them seize you if you believe in God and the Last Day; and let a party of the believers witness their chastisement.

How can the translations be so different for the same arabic words?

Sometimes this man and woman is referred to as just that, simply man or woman who have had sex outside marriage, sometimes by the pejorative term fornicator or adulterer. So we have the old problem that Christians point out which is that Allah seems to be a bad communicator or his minions think they know better what he should be saying and it is not what he actually said. So they have to cover up for him because image is everything in Islam.

So with some translations manipulation of the text is going on because the translators want to cover up the contradiction between the hadith, which prescribes stoning for adultery, and the Koran which only mandates 100 lashes as the punishment for adultery. This creates a confusion amongst the translations which betrays the taquiya which is going on behind the scenes.

One Response to Modern Muslim exegetes change and\or add words to Allah’s revelation to help him to save face

  1. θ says:

In Islamic logics, any married man and married women must be dissolving all his and her marriage first before committing a Zina, hence practically the term of “married adulterer” and “married adulteress” is as silly as married bachelor. That’s why Qur’an doesn’t constitute stoning for the case of adultery.
That’s hidden wisdom for Islamic divorcement.
In Christianity, one can’t divorce the spouse by utterance or writing.
