The Muslim can only keep the Golden Rule when he is weak and restrained by non-Sharia laws. Otherwise he must be harsh to non-Muslims if Sharia has the upper hand. The problem for the Muslim is that all men are commanded by Jesus to keep the Golden Rule and he will judge and punish all men on the basis of this rule

O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who are the Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see V.2:2).

The specific Arabic word “Al-Kuffar” of Q.9, v.123 means the violent, combatant, murderous infidels.
Moslems could afford to live in a tolerant life with the so-called “Al-Kafirin” per Q.86, v.17, but not with the Kuffar.

Killing the enemy combatant in the war is a norm acceptable by today’s standard of Self-defense.
Nevertheless, we refer to the Sunnah on the war with the Jews, the choice of banishment of the enemy combatants (meaning to spare their lives) Q.5, v.33 is actually a norm and preference of the early Moslems, whereas the option of killing is rather an exception.

The word “Kuffar” occurs 14 times throughout Qur’an, out of them 13 verses refer to the hostile, belligerent, violent infidels or combatant infidels, while only one verse refers to the cultivation (Q.57, v.20). Four verses are mentioned in the 9th Sura.
    Q.5 v.57, Q.9 v.68, Q.9 v.73, Q.9 v.120, Q.9 v.123, Q.13 v.42, Q.48 v.29, Q.57 v.20, Q.60 v.10, Q.60 v.11, Q.60 v.13, Q.66 v.9, Q.83 v.34, Q.83 v.36.

  2. θ says:

Whom Qur’an makes it priority to fight against is the “nearby” belligerent infidels per Q.9, v.123, not those who live farther. It laid a later theological concept of Dar al-Islam, that is the land of Moslems has to have a minimum standard of safety for both the peaceful Moslems and the tolerant Non Moslems.

  3. madmanna says:

The Quran makes no distinction except that they are non-Muslims to be fought for that reason alone.

  4. θ says:

Jewish creditor for the household of Prophet Muhammad:
Bukhari Hadith Vol 3, Hadith 453
Narrated by Aisha, Allah’s Messenger bought some foodstuff (barley) from a Jew on credit and mortgaged his iron armor to him.
Bukhari Hadith Vol 3, Hadith 283
Narrated by Qatada, Anas bin Malik went to the Prophet with barley bread having some dissolved fat on it. The Prophet had mortgaged his armor to a Jew in Medinah and took from him some barley for his family. Anas heard him saying, The household of Muhammad did not possess even a single Sa of wheat or food grains for the evening meal, although he has nine wives to look after.
    Bukhari Hadith 4.Vol 4, Hadith 165
Narrated by Aisha. Allah’s Messenger died while his (iron) armor was mortgaged to a Jew for thirty Sas of barley.

More than just as friends, Moslem men are allowed to intimately take the women of Ahlu Kitabs to bed as legitimate wives.
Q.5, v.5 And lawful in marriage are chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking secret lovers.
