Mohammed never recognized the right of the Medinan Jews to remain neutral in his conflict with the Meccans

When Mohammed first came to Medina he was politically weak and forged an alliance with the Jewish tribes there in the form of a pact of mutual defence and nonaggression. After a while he began to attack the trade caravans of the Meccans and aggressively provoke them to instigate a war. Mohammed was the clear aggressor and the Jews of Medina saw this. His actions were not necessary to defend himself. They were purely aggressive in nature with the goal of attaining complete political and religious dominance over a tribe which only sought to trade to make a living peacefully without violence and practice its own religion. The Meccans never attacked Mohammed outside Mecca. Mohammed constantly sought to prevent the Meccans from practising their religion in and around the Kaaba and take control of the Kaaba himself. Mohammed was also threatening the Jews because they did not believe his claim to be a prophet. So we see that neither the Meccans nor the Jews were actually using violence or even threatening to use violence against Mohammed. He was the one that was threatening the Jews with violence if they did not become Muslims and attacking the trade caravans of the Meccans. In this situation the Jews were forced to revoke their treaty with Mohammed and seek for a way to defend themselves against his aggression. The only avenue left to them was to try to remain neutral or seek protection from Mohammed from the only group that had the means to defend themselves against his aggression. For this reason Mohammed unjustly attacked the Jews of Medina by exiling, robbing, enslaving and killing them in the same way as the warners and messengers who are described in the Koran as his predecessors. All you will hear from Muslim apologists is that the Jews broke their treaty but they will not tell you why.

The clause about the right to stay on Neutrality is clearly written in Clause 47 or Clause 57 of the Medina Charter that deals with occasions when the Jews or Moslems choose to not taking part in the war of the pact allies.

    47. He who goes out as well as he who remains is safe in the city except he who does wrong or acts treacherously. Allah is a protector of whoever is good and faithful, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.
57 Whether an individual goes out to fight (in accordance with the terms of this Pact) or remains in his home, he will be safe unless he has committed a crime or is a sinner. (i.e. No one will be punished in his individual capacity for not having gone out to fight in accordance with the terms of this Pact).

Not all military involvement of the West is considered bad for Moslems. Afghanistan, Bosnia, the First Gulf War, 1948 Jordan-Israel war, even in certain extent the toppling of Libyan tyrant.

As for the radicals, we Moslems don’t deny that the extremist Khawarijites really emerged from within our Moslem world itself, and they just takfired almost early Moslems. Life is too short to figure out a restless way how to reform them, and the chance to succeed is too small.

What’s more important is, we Moslems are able to reform the West on how they appreciate Islam.

Mohammed broke the treaty because he added the condition of believing him to be a prophet for immunity from being attacked by his clan. The Jews could not comply, which Mohammed knew beforehand as he planned this strategy from the beginning or his arrival in Mecca. First to make a pact and then demand the impossible.

  4. θ says:

    The accusation is cheap.
    (i) The changing of Qiblat from the city of Jerusalem to Makkah occurs at time when Moslems were just conducting the skirmishes and raids around the outskirt of Madinah against the Makkah’s caravans that illegally sold all the stolen or confiscated properties and belongings of the immigrant Moslems.
It means Prophet Muhammad doesn’t have any conflict with the Jews yet.

(ii) There’s no clause of Jizya whatsoever within the Madinah charter.
It means Prophet Muhammad doesn’t have any economical intention to try to confiscate any wealth of the Jews, let alone to plunder them.

(iii) Moslems already obtained the economical income from the skirmishes.
It means Prophet Muhammad doesn’t need to seek an additional income from of the Jews.

(iv) There’s no initial requirement for the Jews and Christians to believe in the Prophethood.
Qur’an assures in numerous verses that it is quite sufficient for the Jews and Christians to simply believe in Allah and the Afterlife in order to be safe.

    (v) Personal feud.
The sending of some hitmen to terminate some Jewish poets (Afak, Asma, Ashraf) has prompted the Jews to declare the position of Neutrality over the personal vendettas and feuds.
Merit of Prophet Muhammad’s patience and a mutual agreement with the Jews for ending both the blasphemy and the threats:
Abi Dawud Book 19, Hadith 2994
Ka’ab bin Malik who was one of those whose repentance was accepted said “Ka’ab bin Al Ashraf used to satire the Prophet and incited the infidels of the Quraish against him. When the Prophet came to Madeena, its people were intermixed, some of them were Muslims and others polytheists aho worshipped idols and some were Jews. They used to hurt the Prophet and his Companions. Then Allaah Most High commanded His Prophet to show patience and forgiveness. So Allaah revealed about them “And ye shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who receive Book before you”. When Ka’ab bin Al Ashraf refused to desist from hurting the Prophet, the Prophet ordered Sa’d bin Mu’adh to send a band to kill him. He sent Muhammad bin Maslamah and mentioned the story of his murder. When they killed him, the Jews and the polytheist were frightened. Next day they came to the Prophet and said “Our Companions were attacked and night and killed.” The Prophet informed them about that which he would say. The Prophet then called them so that he could write a deed of agreement between him and them and they should fulfill its provisions and desist from hurting him. He then wrote a deed of agreement between him and them and the Muslims in general.”

In other words he was living from brigandry. He deliberately chose not to earn his living by working nine to five but by violently stealing from others. He had ways and means of transferring his assets from Mecca to Medina. He could have earned a living but he had thugs and villians to provide for who looked up to him.

Mohammed was killing for money. Even if the Meccans were in his debt, which is questionable as his actions were damaging the economic viability of the Meccans with the aim of completely destroying their economy, he still broke the law of Moses which does not allow killing merely for economic or territorial gain or recompense.

You confirm that I was right after all. Mohammed carefully excluded all possibility of compromise with the Meccans and the Jews so that he could justify attacking them, which I believe was his intention from the beginning.

Mohammed added conditions of immunity ( from being attacked by his band of thugs and bandits ) to the treaty he made with the Jews upon arriving in Medina.

So he broke the treaty, not the Jews.

“Madmanna says: In other words he was living from brigandry.”

Of course those early Moslems brought out at least 50% – 75 % fortunes from Makkah to Madinah during the Hijrah. Certainly they had planned to stay longer over there. Early Moslems such as Uthman, Hamzah, Ali (son of a powerful Abu Talib), Umar Ibn Khattab, et cetera were a group of super wealthy Arabs. Even one rich person Uthman Ibn Affan may be able to buy all houses and all farms throughout Madinah.
Now, with just 10% fortunes getting retrieved back from the Makkah’s caravans the early Moslems have re-positioned themselves again as millionaires in Madinah.

“He deliberately chose not to earn his living by working nine to five but by violently stealing from others.”

The abundant wealth of the deceased Khadijah can’t be transferred but Prophet Muhammad has a honorary duty to protect it all out in order to appreciate her spirit and her clan.
With just 10% fortunes retrieving back from the Makkah’s caravans, Prophet Muhammad proves his commitment to honor Khadijah even though he stays in Madinah.

“He had ways and means of transferring his assets from Mecca to Medina.”

It is more about a greater lesson of defending and standing for the basic rights instead of trivial technicality.
In Islam being a coward is a sin, hence it is not an option. Standing up to defend one’s basic rights is one of main preconditions for getting the Eternal and better life from Allah.
Q.42, v.39. And those who when befalling upon them the transgressor, they help themselves.
