Why did Mohammed go to the Jews and threaten them if they were already monotheistic believers in the same God?

A conversation between Mohammed and the Jews could have gone something like this:

Mohammed: Hi, I am a prophet sent to you by God.

Jews: Hi, which tribe do you come from?

Mohammed: I’m not a Jew.

Jews: How can you be a prophet if you are not a Jew?

Mohammed: I am a prophet sent to you by God.

Jews: You can’t be a prophet to us if you are not from one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Mohammed: Look in your book. You will find that I am prophesied there.

Jews: No there is nothing in our holy book about a prophet coming from Arabia. Just as a matter of curiosity what is your message?

Mohammed: I am a prophet sent to you by God.

Jews: Yes, but what is your message?

Mohammed: I am a prophet sent to you by God.

Jews: That’s all well and good. We know that a true prophet comes from God but a prophet must have a message. What is your message?

Mohammed: I am a prophet sent to you by God.

Jews: We cannot believe you because you are not a Jew. Also we cannot believe that you are a prophet because you don’t have a message.

Mohammed: The unbelievers will go to hell and roast in the fire.  (As for) those who took the calf (for a god), surely wrath from their Lord and disgrace in this world’s life shall overtake them, and thus do We recompense the devisers of lies. They shall have chastisement in this world’s life, and the chastisement of the hereafter is certainly more grievous, and they shall have no protector against Allah.

Jews: But we both believe in the same God that you call Allah. We just have different ways of worshipping him. We are not responsible for the sins of our forefathers and we are not worshipping any other gods except the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We are not unbelievers and we have not done anything worthy of God’s judgement. In view of all this your coming to us makes no sense. Please tell us who sent you to us and why. Until you can do so we reject your claim to be a prophet from God.

Mohammed: Jews, submit to Allah. Become Muslim and you will be protected.

Jews: You have delivered Allah’s word, Mohammed, the word of your god. But why do we need to be protected if, as you said, there is no compulsion in religion? We are both monotheists worshipping the same God in different ways. Which laws of Moses are we breaking? If you cannot tell us which laws we are breaking you cannot be a prophet.

Mohammed: That is my wish, accept Islam and you will be protected.

Jews: You have delivered Allah’s word but you have nothing new to say to us , and you are not one of us, so you cannot be a prophet according to our understanding of what a prophet is and does.

Mohammed: That is my wish, accept Islam and you will be protected. You need to know that the earth belongs to Allah, and I intend to expel you from this land. If you have property you should sell it. Otherwise you had better remember that this land belongs to Allah and Mohammed.

“Madmanna says: Which laws of Moses are we breaking? If you cannot tell us which laws we are breaking you cannot be a prophet.”

    Deut 18:19
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

    Hab 3
3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.4 And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power.5 Before him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet.6 He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting.7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction:and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.8 Was the LORD displeased against the rivers? was thine anger against the rivers? was thy wrath against the sea, that thou didst ride upon thine horses and thy chariots of salvation?9 Thy bow was made quite naked, according to the oaths of the tribes, even thy word. Selah. Thou didst cleave the earth with rivers.10 The mountains saw thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high.11
The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear.12 Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh the heathen in anger.13 Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Selah.14 Thou didst strike through with his staves the head of his villages: they came out as a whirlwind to scatter me: their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly.15 Thou didst walk through the sea with thine horses, through the heap of great waters.16 . When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops.17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

    Joel 2
11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?

Early and Medieval Moslems dethroned the great empires, from Byzantium in the north, Visigoth in other continent, Persia in the east, Hindustanis in the south, to Mongols in the far east with sufism.
    Isa 21
6 For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth.7 And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:8 And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:9 And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.

Here’s another thought. AIUI, all prophets before Muhammed were already Muslim according to Islam. This being the case, a:) why would Muhammed need to go to the Jews in the first place and b) if he did, would his message not have been the same? Then again, Islam proclaims that the message of Jesus and the early Christians was the same as Islam, why therefore did Muhammed not go to these Christians who were Muslims and find a ready audience?

  4. θ says:

As Qur’an summarised in Q,5, v.18 the Arabian Jews and Christians went astray into the religious racialism and exclusivity.
