We continue with our rebuttal.
The things which the NT says concerning Christ’s exaltation places the JWs in a major predicament, since the God-breathed Scriptures bear witness that it is God Almighty that grants repentance and forgiveness of sins,
“When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” Acts 11:18
“in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” 2 Timothy 2:25-26
And also state that a person must call upon Yahweh’s or Jehovah’s name in order to be saved. These same writings even confirm that Jehovah’s the One who pours forth his Spirit upon his people:
“But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of MY Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of MY Spirit; and they shall prophesy: and I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: and it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:16-21
There’s more. These sacred writings teach that there is none like Jehovah who sits enthroned on high:
“The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!“ Psalm 113:4-6
Astonishingly, the book of Hebrews takes the language of the Greek version of the above text,
“Who is as the Lord our God? who dwells in the high places (en hypselois),” Psalm 112:5
And applies it to its depiction of Christ’s heavenly enthronement next to his Father!
“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high (en hypselois)… But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?” Hebrews 1:3, 13 – cf. 8:1; 10:12-13; 12:2
Moreover, the Holy Bible not only testifies that there is no one else who bears the name Jehovah,
“Thou, even thou, art LORD ALONE; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.” Nehemiah 9:6
“That men may know that thou, whose name ALONE is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.” Psalm 83:18
It even proclaims that Jehovah’s name alone is exalted above everything else:
“Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name ALONE is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:13 New King James Version (NKJV)
To top it off, the inspired revelations claim that it is to Jehovah that every knee will bow and every tongue shall confess, as a way of acknowledging that he alone is a just God and Savior that is able to save all the ends of the earth:
“Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.” Isaiah 45:21-23
What makes this rather astonishing is that we already saw in pt. 1 how the Apostle Paul took the very language of the above passage and applied it to the worship, which every creature is expected to give to the risen Christ in acknowledgment of his sovereignty over all creation!
Carefully note the following:
“I have sworn by MYSELF, the word is gone out of MY mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto ME every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.”
“that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
But that’s not all that this blessed servant of Christ did with this OT text. Elsewhere he even quotes the Greek version of Isaiah 45:23 in his affirmation that everyone shall one day stand before the judgment seat of Christ in order to give an account to God for everything a person has done:
“For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow TO ME, and every tongue shall confess TO GOD. So then every one of us shall give account of himself TO GOD.” Romans 14:9-12
To say that what Paul wrote here is truly remarkable would be a wild understatement!
This holy Apostle of Christ is basically stating that Jesus is the Lord God whom Isaiah said everyone must worship, and shall do so when they all appear before the risen Lord on the Day of Judgment so as to give an account of their lives to him!
That Christ is the Lord God who shall judge all creation is made clearer by what Paul says elsewhere,
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.” 2 Corinthians 5:10-11
“In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.” Romans 2:16
And further confirmed by the Apostle John:
“For the Father JUDGETH NO MAN, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, EVEN AS they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him… And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” John 5:22-23, 27
Notice the reason Christ gives for being appointed the Judge of all who determines the fate of every individual, e.g., he judges everyone so that all may realize that he is the Son who is worthy to receive the same honor that God the Father is supposed to receive.
Here is a helpful breakdown of the preceding points which should assist the readers in seeing for themselves how the assertions of the NT concerning Christ end up proving that he is none other than Jehovah God in the flesh.
Jehovah alone is exalted above every creature.
Jehovah’s name alone is exalted above all else.
Jehovah alone is seated on high over the entire creation.
Jehovah is the One that pours out his Spirit upon all his servants.
Every creature is expected to worship Jehovah in recognition of his being the only God and Savior who is capable of saving everyone.
Christ has been exalted above every creature.
Christ possesses the name which is above all names.
Christ is seated on high alongside the Father over the entire creation.
Christ is the One who pours out the Holy Spirit upon all his servants.
Every creature is expected to worship Jesus in recognition of his being the sovereign Lord of all creation who is able to save.
Therefore, Jesus must be Jehovah God in the flesh (even though he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit).
Now the JWs can try to avoid this inescapable conclusion by arguing that the NT contradicts the OT since it ascribes to a creature the unique status, functions and worship, which the Hebrew Bible emphatically stresses belong only to Jehovah. The problem, however, is that no JW can adopt such a position since the governing body of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society wholeheartedly affirm the inspiration, infallibility and inerrancy of both the Old and New Testaments. Therefore, the JWs have no choice but to accept the fact that the God-breathed Scriptures plainly and emphatically identify Jesus Christ as Jehovah God Incarnate.
We are now ready to proceed to the final part of our discussion where we tackle the Muslim misuse of these same NT texts.
